The Scholarship Committee of the Berkshire District Medical Society awards interest-free loans on an annual basis to residents of Berkshire County, Massachusetts who have been accepted to or who are attending an accredited medical or osteopathic school in the United States and Canada. Recipients of the award agree to begin repayment of the loan the year of graduation with one-half of the amount to be repaid in four years and the balance in two additional years.
The revolving scholarship program has awarded close to $500,000 in loans to approximately 80 Berkshire County students since its inception in 1961. The program was started with donations from physician members of the Berkshire District Medial Society and a bequest to the Society by the estate of Hazel M. Boom in memory of her father, Augustus K. Boom, MD, president of the Society in 1916.
