Policing is a high-demand and high-stress profession, one in which police officers are exposed to a wide variety of stressors in their everyday environment. Such stressors include calls related to suicidal behavior, and police are typically on-scene at suicide attempts and after completed suicides. Of significant concern is suicide within the police ranks. Police suicide takes more lives than all other line-of-duty-deaths, impacting a department as a whole, its officers as individuals and the police culture in general.
In this training Dr. Feldman will discuss the role of police officers in preventing suicide, provide an introduction to those mental illnesses most commonly associated with suicide, present information and communication techniques important for responding to suicide calls, discuss the impact of suicide calls on police officers, and suggest intervention techniques for suicidal behavior involving police officers. The workshop will be interactive, and incorporate material to facilitate participation by attendees.
