Description:
Palliative care and end-of-life conversations are tough.  They are wrought with fear, ambivalence and complicated personal and cultural differences.  They can leave providers and interpreters emotionally exhausted.  We will explore vocabulary used in pain and other symptom management conversations, psycho-social interventions, the MOLST form and other end-of-life conversations.  Explore the common cultural concerns which may arise during these encounters and how to effectively intervene as a cultural broker.

Required material: Working pens/pencils

Pre-course reading: Silva, M. D. et. al. (2016). Review article: Interpreting at the end of life: A systematic review of the impact of interpreters on the delivery of palliative care services to cancer patients with limited English proficiency. Journal of Pain and Symptom Management 51(3). http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/26549596

Learning Objectives: Medical interpreters participating in this training program will be able to:

    1. Recognize and accurately interpret terms used in palliative care and end-of-life care.
    2. Explain the often complex cultural norms and challenges during end-of-life care and death.
    3. Recognize how to better approach the mediation of cultural bumps with other providers.
