Why?
Genetic counseling adds the extra challenge of being a highly technical, rapid advancing and little understood area of medicine. It can be confusing not only for Limited English Proficient patients but also for the general public and even many healthcare providers. One cannot interpret well what one does not understand, and without effective interpreting, LEP patients cannot take full advantage of advances in genetic medicine.

PREREQUISITE & REGISTRATION FEES
Prerequisite: Applicant must have completed a Medical Interpreter Training Program
Fee: $50.00 Fee includes materials, certificate of Completion and CE Fees. REGISTER HERE

Program: 9:00 AM to 2:30 PM (2-15 min break)
Credits/Contact Hours: CCHI 5 & IMIA 0.5 CEU

Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Define basic concepts in genetics such as gene, chromosome, variant, risk.
- Describe the work of genetic counselors.
- Describe the purpose of genetic testing.
- Describe five common genetic tests used in prenatal care.
- Identify five of the more common genetic conditions seen in the U.S.

Certificates and Completion Requirements: Participants are expected to sign‑in and sign‑out, attend the entire program, and complete an evaluation. Certificates will be emailed to participants four weeks after program completion. Participants will not receive a certificate of completion until payment has been received.
Refunds: Berkshire AHEC Medical Interpreting Program does not provide refunds after 10 full calendar days prior to the start date of the program. If an individual request a refund due to illness, a partial credit towards a workshop occurring in the same fiscal year may be issued. However, you must notify the Berkshire AHEC office before the close of business the day prior to the scheduled workshop. Credits for cancellation due to illness will only be issued once per fiscal year per individual.
